African Feminisms Conference 2019

Via Sharlene Khan African Feminisms (Afems) Conference 2019 Call for Presentations. Closing date 31st March 2019. African Feminisms (Afems) 2019: Theorising from the Epicentres of our Agency 5-7 September 2019, Wits University, Johannesburg Organised by the Department of Visual Arts, Wits University and the Department of Literary Studies in English, Rhodes University The third edition of the African Feminisms (Afems) conference will happen from the 5-7 September 2019 at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa, in collaboration with the Department of Literary Studies in English, Rhodes University. The 2019 theme is based on Nigerian Stiwanist Molara Ogundipe's conversation in 2002 with South African black feminist Desiree Lewis in which Ogundipe states: For me, social ideas should emerge from a consciousness that thinks of what is beneficial to a human being as a person, not because the ideas occurred or are practiced in Europe or America. We need to overc

incels, hikikomori, and school shootings

How distraught men are at losing their position on the top of the visibility pile. For centuries the world revolved around them. And it made them lazy, gave them so much power that they cruised. They didn't have to produce content within themselves. At the same time the rest of the world, buried under their trash, oil spills, rapes, child marriages, molestations, extortions, factory farmings, trophy huntings, pollutions and more, grew to mistrust them. And now we have global media - we can talk about their corrupt souls and discuss the length and breadth of their insanity. No surprise that they are clamoring to control that media, control the internet, control our minds. They are grappling at straws to make rafts to new stages. Indiscriminate killing is their solution. How sad.  Dave Cullen on school shootings, "I have taken to calling them spectacle murders, because they are essentially performances – and without the media, they have no stage."

Abduction as Romance

Image
Loving the man-feminist  Pop Culture Detective  who shows us feminists here, that Abduction is framed as Romance in the movies. And while Kidnapping is a federal crime, the kidnapper-in-movies is dressed with hearts, empathy and flowers to overcome the sticky issue of #EnthusiasticConsent so that we women are not clear about what Red Flags really look like.  Not to mention the lack of clarity on what's not acceptable that is demonstrated to men. The blurry Red Flag makes men who can’t just ‘be nice’ and get women, instead they be awful and dream daily of just being able to abduct and rape.

Woman directors

Image
Jeryl Bruner, "Academy Award nominations for female directors have been scarce. In the entire history of the Oscars just five women (yes, five!) have been nominated in the Best Director Category since 1929. Those women were Lina Wertmüller for  Seven Beauties  (1977) Jane Campion for  The Piano  (1994) Sofia Coppola for  Lost in Translation  (2004) Kathryn Bigelow for  The Hurt Locker  (2010) and Greta Gerwig for  Lady Bird  (2018)." People often don't stand up for themselves because they don't say the right words in the moment. Bullies, who get lots of practice, always have the right words. Thus, logic says that if we stood up for ourselves more, the right words will come more easily. People with a bit of power and familiarity with the eccentric processes they preside over, enjoy making us wait and dangle on the end of their inconsiderate and arbitrary rules' strings. Each time we dangle we lose a little confidence in our ability to engage our world. I always try to be solution oriented when I am asked to do stuff, engagement oriented. I respond, respond, respond. May I be more so, daily. Authors have the benefit of writing what we wish we had said in the moment. And those are my favorite moments in film. Ben Chaplin is asking, via an unhelpful cashier's microphone, who he has to fuck to get the promised discount on his orange juice.       ...      Thursday's Cat Me

When women get equal pay

#Feminism ~ "Study after study has shown that when men make less than women, women generally don't want to marry them." The ignored variable is the Sexist Man. If a man is an equal, loving and respectful partner, who is invested in my orgasm, why would I not want to marry him if I'm heterosexual. The converse of the argument above is "Pay women less so that they are coerced into men's beds.".... And more than that... the men who subscribe to this thinking don't see anything wrong with it. Therein lies the problem. https://mavenroundtable.io/theintellectualist/news/tucker-carlson-civilizations-die-when-women-earn-more-money-than-men-K179pgOui0ytrhAwMrd3IQ/

When all women are feminist, how will we procreate?

Image
#Journal ~ People always laugh at me when I tell them that I have been asked (about feminism, which people ignoranly equate with lesbianism), "But if all women are feminist, how will we procreate?" As though the world is some idiocracy and people would forget how to have sex. As if there are not piles and piles of video that can remind one.  Feminism ~ Well there's an irony developing in a tiny microcosm of the world. Japan is a 'first world' country that is small and sensitive to internal and external changes. Their birthrate has dropped so low that they don't have a big enough tax base to sustain their population in the style to which they have become accustomed - universal health care, elderly care, day care, street care, housing care, welfare. And forests full of people are committing suicide at the end of a string that they tie to themselves, so that they can find their way out of the forest if they change their mind (and/or that they can be found).

You (2018)

Never mind, You (2018) is palling. "If we don't have trust we have nothing." Bullshit. Just another American show setting up all the relationship fallacies and crazinesses and trotting them out one by one to make a stony-faced man look mad. Throw in a couple of murders and now he's really vilified. And she is too for a slew of man-fucking and so many many many apologies, at least two per episode. He doesn't apologise. He just forgives her and forgives her so now she's the bad guy. Argh. Incel-making material. And her name does not end on an ee. I had high hopes.
