Writing down south

Image
When I was writing scifi with my friends, we would write together on an online doc at the same time. Silently for the most part, but like we were in the same room and could ask each other stuff or clarify points. I loved it so much. But one thing was how it freaked them out that words come to me easily. The words were words they had not encountered... sorghum, sheath... words that astonished me they didn't know. Both are first language English in terms of proficiency, their mother tongue proficiency so undermined by the legacy of Bantu Education. It's horrible. When I was at university, when I was 20, I was already aware that people around me needed me to translate those words I wanted to use because they were the perfect word. Even now, irreducible. I love that word, but you said no. I am still there. Translating words. I looked at the word allay - allay fear - and thought, should I use it. Two minutes ago. That's why I am a better editor than writer. With editing I can pi...

Love and LURVE

Image
Why do I think people cheat in relationships? I think you lose the NRE - new relationship energy. It's normal. It always happens. And your partner doesn't give you that lust feeling, that INTENSE LURVE anymore. And then, you're an arse for not appreciating the other things that are there in its place - you've taken the time because of past LURVE to really know them, to build history, share common values and goals. Those things are the things that that insignificant LURVE leads to. So you, idiot, think LURVE is the goal and wander off looking for more of it. OR once the LURVE fades you find they're an arse and you have no partner-choosing skills so you wander off aimlessly.

Like-mindedness. Like. :)

I found this article's bias interesting. Can 'signalling' not be the same as, 'Hey, buddy this is what I am up to', for the same reasons one might do it in real life? I know why I do things, to attract like-minded people - who might hear of a nice project and know they should include me so that I can find more like-minded people. I know I let people know about nice opportunities, and they let me know. The circles grow. And non-like-minded people would wonder, in their silence, if we were taking over the world. When people say the k-word, they're signaling. I know what to do with that signalling. In the age of communication, this kind of bias about signalling is a signal. I know what to do with that signalling. Aeon:  https://aeon.co/ideas/is-virtue-signalling-a-perversion-of-morality

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Image
Delicious feminist analysis by Megan Garber. " I never bothered to question why it was Harry who met Sally, and not the other way around. I never wondered why it was Harry who changed so drastically over the course of the film, while Sally's primary evolution involved her hairstyle. I never paid much attention to all the hints the movie drops that Sally, from almost the beginning of her friendship with Harry, has been waiting for him to decide that, when it comes to her, he wants  the sex part to get in the way ." Just go with it (2011)

Image
Just go with it (2011) is a silly movie but I love the love scene in front of her hotel door. Anniston and Sandler do the best job of making me believe it. And I rarely do. Very rarely. Major suspension of diselief is required for love scenes for a radical feminist like me. I got it right with Hanks and Ryan too, and then she spoiled it by slagging off romantic comedies and refusing to consider doing one with Hanks again.

Etiquette of Hugging

I don't want to be a part of this social madness. Huggers should have an H branded on their foreheads for this behaviour, like the Adulterers back in the day.  I don't want to be hugged as part of the display of your social currency. If everyone hugs you back then you are liked. No. And when I say No the value of my Hug should not go up, should not make you more bankable. People should see you 'persuading' me in the same light as when a woman says No and you go on pushing, wheedling, whining, dismissing her sovereignty over her body. People should look at that and say, Hey, cut that out. Or intervene, or distract you with a colourful plastic toy.  I am uncomfortable with hugging and touching people and I am uncomfortable x855 touching people who don't honour my discomfort or are sexist in another way, or racist. I don't want to hug PROBLEMATIC people. And I definitely don't want to hug people so that I can do the whole KEEP THE PEACE, NO SOCIAL CONF...

Last Chance Harvey (2008)Review:

Strangely, this movie was about Harvey. I guess there are rarely films of gravity and wit about men's lives, but you know I was there for the Emma Thompson's character's backstory. That would have been far more interesting to me. You know I love Emma, she can do anything! And frequently does. I love her expanding middle and I love her crows feet. Perfect realness. Real perfection. And this is not vitriol, just admiration. The film is 'nice', I don't always want to see issue-movies. And yet there were issues, just well disguised. Tangible. Not too funny, not too sad, not too surprising. Britishly well-restrained. IMDB Last Chance Harvey (2008) Actors: Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson Director: Joel Hopkins

Review: Management (2008)

Worth seeing for some very truthful scenes, but kinda yawn. IMDB Management (2008) Director: Stephen Belber Actors: Jennifer Aniston, Steve Zahn

Review: Coco Chanel (2008)

Coco Chanel was kinda nice, great cinematography - or shall I say, it wasn't linear but it was a bit been there done that. Her long-time lover was badly cast. But I loved the woman who played her, and there were great notions. Coco was wonderful. IMDB Coco Chanel (2008) Actors: Barbora Bobulova, Brigitte Boucher Director: Christian Duguay
